Your trip in the tropics will begin with the exploration of an active volcano on a captivating trail that winds throughout the dry forest. This will be a 3-hour walk with constantly changing altitudes that will show you many different landscapes. The “Las Pailas” section of the Rincon de La Vieja National Park is the perfect place to witness the power of an active volcano. You will see the bubbling volcanic mud as the power liberates the underground with the energy given off from the volcano. This power is an important source of energy for many industries.

The trail is a loop of about 3 miles. You can find a wide variety of vegetation, primary and secondary forests that are home to beautiful mammals such as raccoons, white-nosed coatis, Central American agoutis, armadillos, white-tail deers, tapirs, and three species of monkeys. Some of the most common birds are the Blue-crowned Motmot, the Crested Guan and the Emerald Toucanet.

As you continue along the trail you will encounter many different displays of volcanic activity that will make it impossible to forget that you are in an active volcano region. Steam and sulfur pour out of the yellow and rust-colored ground at natural fumaroles. Clay and coffee-colored pools bubble with boiling hot volcanic water. Smooth gray volcanic mud froths and explodes upwards at the “cauldrons”. You’ll also find beautiful little rushing rivers and small waterfalls crisscrossing the trails. The tour departs at 8:30 am from your hotel.

You will return to the hotel after the hike and the rest of the day is free to enjoy the hotel facilities or take an optional tour (not included).
